What Are Osteoporosis & Bone Density
Osteoporosis is a silent disease. Why osteoporosis is called a silent disease? When your bones are at osteoporosis level i.e. having very low bone density and become weak, they won’t give you any signal, symptom nor cause any pain at all. You’ll only feel the pain when there’s a bone fracture. Therefore, many elderly especially would assume that their bones are still healthy and strong which in actual fact could be otherwise.
Bone density would give you a reliable indication of your bone health and strength. Bone density is represented by T-score; the higher the T-score, the better. Bone density can be categorized into healthy, osteopenia and osteoporosis levels. If your bones are healthy, the T-score would be at -1.0 and above. T-score within the range of -1.0 and -2.5 is called osteopenia i.e. low bone density. T-score at -2.5 and below represents osteoporosis. When the bone density is at osteoporosis level, there would be a risk of getting bone fracture.
When one’s bone density is at osteoporosis level, it’s important to increase the bone density and to avoid falling down or carrying heavy stuff.
How To Increase Bone Density Naturally
Intake of the right nutrients, adequate exercise, exposure under the morning sun, sleep well are important contributing factors which can help on bone health.
As regards nutrition, combination of hydrolyzed collagen, rose hips, vitamins, minerals would provide essential nutrients for bone and joint. Special amino acids from hydrolyzed collagen, phytonutrients, calcium, magnesium, zinc together with multivitamin are beneficial to bone density and joint cartilage, as these nutrients can help to nourish, build and repair body tissues.
Exercising for at least half an hour a day in the morning, and brisk walking, tai-chi or qi-qong are the good options. Limit your coffee intake to no more than 1 cup a day.
Osteoporosis & Compression Fracture
The spine shown in picture below belongs to Mdm Yuen who’s in her mid 70’s. She used to be very active until a fall happened when she carried a pail of water. The fall caused much pain at her lower back and hip, and she was unable to move initially. CT scan showed compression fracture in one of the spinal bones due to osteoporosis. She had to wear support braces to enable her to get up from bed or to move around. She was refrained from doing anything apart from lying down as she couldn’t walk, sit or stand for long.
Mdm Yuen has been taking Mixed Cocoa With Gelatine Hydrolysate and applying pain relief cream since the incident. Determined to be back on her feet again soon, she started with light exercises under the morning sun since her condition first permitted. Her condition has progressed well and, she’s getting more active since the beginning of the third month. She still needs the support braces to protect her spine when she moves around.
Osteoporosis & Hunch Back, Loss Of Height
Do you know that osteoporosis can cause hunch back and ‘shrinkage’ in height? When hunch back happens, it may cause back discomfort or pain in the longer term. If you noticed that your loved ones are having hunch back, especially the elderly, their bones may have become weak without them knowing it. Go for a bone density scan to check on the bone density level.
Mdm Tan is in her late 60’s and her latest bone density T-score is at -2.4. which is at osteopenia level. She was having osteoporosis with T-score of -3.5 about 9 months ago. Her progress is a definitely a good achievement and motivation. Mdm Tan has been taking Mixed Cocoa With Gelatine Hydrolysate before bedtime and going for brisk walking in the morning on a daily basis. Bones need vitamin D which can be obtained from the sunlight, apart from taking nutrition and exercise. No more back discomfort, stiffness and crackling sound in her joints. Her sleep has improved as well.
Bone Density: Your Bone Health Indicator
Bone mineral density gives you an indication if your bones are still healthy and strong. Bone mineral density scan is non-invasive, designed to check whether your bone mineral density is at healthy, osteopenia or osteoporosis level. Bone mineral density is a reliable indicator of bone fracture risk.
