What Are Osteoporosis & Bone Density
Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass, making the bones weak and fragile, and more likely to break. Anyone can develop osteoporosis, but it’s more common in women. It’s a silent disease and one may not know until a bone is broken.
When bone density is at osteoporosis level, it would not give you any signal, symptom nor cause any pain at all. You’ll only feel the pain when there’s a bone fracture. Therefore, many elderly would assume that their bones are still healthy and strong which in actual fact could be otherwise, especially if they have not done bone density test before.
Different part of the bones may have different bone density level. Usually bone density test focuses on the high risk areas such as the wrist, spine and hip, which are prone to fracture.
Bone density would give you a reliable indication of your bone health, showing the hardness and strength of your bone. Bone density is represented by T-score; the higher the T-score, the healthier. Bone density can be categorized into 3 levels, namely:
- Healthy: T-score at -1.0 and above
- Osteopenia: T-score within the range of -1.0 and -2.5, showing that bone density is below normal level
- Osteoporosis: T-score at -2.5 and below
When the bone density is at osteoporosis level, there would be a risk of getting bone fracture. At this stage, it’s important to increase the bone density and to avoid falling down or carrying heavy stuff to avoid any fracture.
How To Increase Bone Density Naturally
Intake of the right nutrients, adequate exercise, exposure under the morning sun, sleep well are important contributing factors which can help on bone health.
As regards nutrition, combination of hydrolyzed collagen, rose hips, vitamins, minerals would provide essential nutrients for bone and joint. Special amino acids from hydrolyzed collagen, phytonutrients, calcium, magnesium, zinc together with multivitamin are beneficial to bone density and joint cartilage, as these nutrients can help to nourish, build and repair body tissues.
Exercising for at least half an hour a day in the morning, and brisk walking, tai-chi or qi-qong are the good options. Limit your coffee intake to no more than 1 cup a day.
Osteoporosis & Compression Fracture
The spine shown in picture below belongs to Mdm Yuen who’s in her mid 70’s. She used to be very active until a fall happened when she carried a pail of water. The fall caused much pain at her lower back and hip, and she was unable to move initially. CT scan showed compression fracture in one of the spinal bones due to osteoporosis. She had to wear support braces to enable her to get up from bed or to move around. She was refrained from doing anything apart from lying down as she couldn’t walk, sit or stand for long.

Determined to be back on her feet again soon, she started with light exercises under the morning sun since her condition first permitted.
